The “Butlin” Silver Cup and Bowl
Trophies for Cycle and Foot Races in 1930
The above photograph illustrates the silver Challenge Cup, Sports Bowl and gold Medals which Mr. B. Butlin, the well-known Skegness amusement caterer, gave for the two sporting events which took place on Thursday, July 3rd, 1930.
The Butlin Charity Sports Cup (centre), valued at £50, is the premier award for a cycle race from Boston to Skegness. It is the annual competition, each year’s winner received a replica. One of the stipulations in this event, which was hoped would attract a good local entry, was that all competitors must be amateurs.
The second event, on the same day, was a foot (Marathon) race from Wanfleet to Skegness. The bowl (value £20) was for 11 months and the following year a replica was presented to the winner. There were gold medals for the second and third to finish.
The events for which Mr. Butlin offered these magnificent prizes were to assist the funds of the Boston Children’s organisations, including the Boston Police Poor Children’s Clothing Fund, In the evening at the Carnival held in the New Amusement Park, the prizes were presented by the Mayor of Boston.
Names for entry were sent in to Mr. H. Smith, 32 Tunnard Street, Boston, or to Mr. C. H. Major, “News” Office, Skegness.
